EVE: Equal Voices in ELT awards badges to ELT conferences who achieve parity in gender and language. Please see below for a description of each badge and links to forms to apply.
Gender Parity
The Gender Parity Badge is blue.
The Gender Parity Badge recognises an equal balance of either genders (two or more) in the plenary or featured speaker line-up, where ‘featured speaker’ refers to speakers used in promotional materials. Balance means the same number of either genders [two or more]. Where an equal balance is impossible [e.g., where there are 5 featured speakers] there can only be a difference of 1, e.g., 3:2, 7:6
The organisers of an ELT conference or event with a finalised line-up which meets the criteria described above should complete the Gender Parity Badge Application Form. EVE will check the Badge Application Form against the event’s website or promotional materials. If the criteria for gender parity are met, the event will then be able to display a Blue EVE badge, showing the title and date of the event, which will be sent to the conference organisers. Note: Gender is taken to refer to the gender by which a speaker identifies.
Language Parity
The Language Parity Badge is red
The Language Parity Badge recognises an equal balance of L1/L2 speakers in the plenary or featured speaker line-up, where ‘featured speaker’ refers to speakers used in promotional materials. Balance means the same number of L1 and L2 speakers [two or more]. Where an equal balance is impossible [e.g., where there are 5 featured speakers] there can only be a difference of 1, e.g., 3:2, 7:6
The organisers of an ELT conference or event with a finalised line-up which meets the criteria described above should complete the Language Parity Badge Application Form. EVE will check the Badge Application Form against the event’s website or promotional materials. If the criteria for language parity are met, the event will then be able to display an Orange EVE badge, showing the title and date of the event, which will be sent to the conference organisers.
Gender and Language Parity
The Gender and Language Parity Badge is yellow
The Gender and Language Parity Badge recognises an equal balance of either gender [two or more] and an equal balance of L1/L2 speakers in the plenary or featured speaker line-up, where ‘featured speaker’ refers to speakers used in promotional materials. Balance means the same number of genders [two or more] and L1 and L2 speakers. Where an equal balance is impossible [e.g., where there are 5 featured speakers] there can only be a difference of 1, e.g., 3:2, 7:6
The organisers of an ELT conference or event with a finalised line-up which meets the criteria described above should complete the Gender and Language Parity Badge Application Form. EVE will check the Badge Application Form against the event’s website or promotional materials. If the criteria for both gender and language parity are met, the event will then be able to display a Gold EVE badge, showing the title and date of the event, which will be sent to the conference organisers. Note: Gender is taken to refer to the gender by which a speaker identifies.
Disclaimer: an event which displays any of the above badges is being recognised for parity across the plenary or featured line-up. Should any last-minute changes be made to the line-up owing to unforeseen circumstances and affecting the balance, the Badge should be removed. However, this may not always be possible. In this case, EVE: Equal Voices in ELT will be not responsible
